Utility companies often disconnect gas service in the spring as winter heating bills pile up. Once service has been disconnected, however, it is very difficult for families to get it restored. Not only are families required to pay all back bills along with interest and penalties, but they usually have to pay disconnection and reconnection service charges and post a large deposit before gas companies will restore service. Once a family loses natural gas they are forced to use wood burning stoves, or kerosene and electric space heaters. All three are extremely dangerous and a major cause of both house fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Even families that have not had their service disconnected have turned to space heaters in an attempt to save on the high cost of gas. – Samuel Davidson

Ten people died in a house fire that broke out early last Thursday morning, April 3, in rural western Pennsylvania. Gas service had been cut off in May of 2005 to the home in Brockway, a town of about 2,000 people 100 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, but believe a space heater may have sparked the blaze.
Nine members from three generations of the Peterson family, ranging in age from four months to 40 years, were killed in the fire that started around 2:30 in the morning and quickly engulfed the wood-frame home. A family friend who had been spending the night was also killed.
Killed in the blaze were Kimberly Peterson, 40, the grandmother, along with five of her children; Rebecca Peterson, 17; Douglas Peterson III, 13; Isaac Peterson, 8; Grace Peterson, 6; and 11-month-old Lillian Peterson.
Also killed were Rebecca Peterson’s daughter, four-month-old Cailyn Watson, and Elizabeth Peterson’s two children, four-year-old Domanic DeIullo and two-year-old Desiree DeIullo. Elizabeth’s fiancé Jason Mowry, 19, was also killed.

Sherif sales are the norm around here. Interestingly, homes are being bought up for 8 thousand dollars, move in condition. They’re not always sucked up by the wealthy either; many a person who is still floating are turning them into rentals and I don’t notice any lower rents reflective of the buying prices….nope business as usual…too bad for renters.

Years ago, I had a friend, Rene, who became very ill with his diabetes; the bank took his house with one payment left on a 3o year mortgage…no friends able to help him and the bank didn’t care. He’s been long dead; one of the BEST guys I’ve known. Shoot me the day I’d make a buck on someone’s misfortune.

I haven’t worked for a large corporation since 1991; told us on a Monday the company we busted our asses getting started was closing that Friday; the following Monday was Christmas. The company told us it was not economically feasible to run, took all our hard earned work and collected data then started the same company up in a third world country with cheap labor. I had relocated across the country, bought my first home, and then lost it all. I was very specialized in my work and you just didn’t walk in any town and find a similar position, so I worked a lot of shit jobs, trying to hold it all together. My real low point was when, the repo man was hauling my car away in the middle of the night….Ever throw yourself on your car begging someone not to take it; that you had to get to work in the morning?

I’m still here, but very much changed in person and lifestyle because I was fortunate to have a family who cared and came and took me home. How much of a priority do you think people in situations similar to the family above put on monitoring their government or being politically active/vocal? Does anyone here have friends who are forced to live like that in the United States? If you do know of a family or individual in need, would you help them? Or…if you’d find yourself in dire straights one day, could you handle it?

I went to the Thai store in Burlington to buy a few things. I spoke to the owner about rising rice prices. He laughed and said the high price isn’t the problem, all the rice has been sold and there hasn’t been any he could buy for 3 months. I was shocked. Thai’s being out of rice is sort of like Americans being out of gasoline. The instability in food prices is going to subject 1-2 billion people to shortages, hunger and famine this year. India has outlawed the export of rice as have many other nations in efforts to keep prices in check. Egypt imports over a billion dollars on wheat annually. To keep everybody fed is going to cost more money than they have. Food riots have already started there. If major commodities prices are pegged to the dollar and the presses keep running faster each month, the spiral will continue to accelerate. As a child I remember owning a 1 million German Mark stamp from the early 1930′s.

Corn just broke the $6 a bushel mark. American meat prices are falling because farmers can’t afford to feed their livestock. Housing prices are falling because buyers can’t get financing. All major lenders are no longer offering 2nd mortgages because lenders are not able to buy out the primary mortgage in the event of a default, regardless of the loan to value ratio. In the business this is called revenue stripping. You lend money to a property owner with a high percentage of ownership in hopes they will default. They all you need to do is to buy out the primary loan and the entire property is yours. Primary lenders are often far away and have no interest in preserving the equity value in a property. People and lenders are just abandoning houses in Michigan and Ohio after mortgage defaults because nobody sees any value in these properties. People have lived in their houses for a year or more because evicting the owners would cost more than a sale could ever bring. Some neighborhoods have abandonment rates of over 30%. Rats start to eat each other when famine strikes.

Taxing and spending your way out of this sort of financial hole is like standing in a bucket and trying to pick yourself up. No amount of bailing can keep the boat afloat if water keeps pouring in. The next batch of presidential nominees are redoubling their promises of more and better bailing techniques.
