“The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro”

Print & pdf

On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass gave a speech at an event commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence, held at Rochester’s Corinthian Hall. It was biting oratory, in which the speaker told his audience, “This Fourth of July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn.” And he asked them, “Do you mean, citizens, to mock me, by asking me to speak to-day?” TS is proud to present it today.

blck-1.jpgFellow Citizens, I am not wanting in respect for the fathers of this republic. The signers of the Declaration of Independence were brave men. They were great men, too Ñ great enough to give frame to a great age. It does not often happen to a nation to raise, at one time, such a number of truly great men. The point from which I am compelled to view them is not, certainly, the most favorable; and yet I cannot contemplate their great deeds with less than admiration. They were statesmen, patriots and heroes, and for the good they did, and the principles they contended for, I will unite with you to honor their memory….

…Fellow-citizens, pardon me, allow me to ask, why am I called upon to speak here to-day? What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? Are the great principles of political freedom and of natural justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, extended to us? and am I, therefore, called upon to bring our humble offering to the national altar, and to confess the benefits and express devout gratitude for the blessings resulting from your independence to us?

Israel at Sixty

Zionists - the modern self-designated heirs to the Jews - have their Lent after Passover, commemorating what they construct as their via dolorosa leading to the “Jewish State.” In the weeks following Pesach the country indulges in a nationalistic orgy, hardly imaginable in any other modern state, reminiscent of a primitive tribe.

Christians - the ancient self-designated heirs to the Jews - commemorate Christ’s tormented way to resurrection and redemption in the weeks leading to Easter. If you want to understand how a whole nation is led to defy its own interests, to follow a corrupt, de facto military leadership wasting the nation’s fortune and blood on unnecessary wars and immoral occupation for decades, pay a visit to Israel shortly after Pesach.

‘Blood Diamonds’ ‘Blood Oil’ and ‘Blood Food’

Print & pdf

by Pablo Ouziel*

We are very comfortable in the west, all of us.

We must learn to cut back on spending, organize ourselves as tax payers, and begin to demand disarmament from our governments, to pull them out of those apparently “unwanted” wars. Until then, the diamonds in our stores will be bloody, the food in our supermarkets will be bloody and the gasoline at our pumps will be bloody.

The West - Blood diamonds blood oil and blood food

True commitment to stopping the war in Iraq requires a global human rights strike, in which the working population of the world stops producing, until the governments and the corporations realize that the voice of the people does indeed matter.

For a while now, I have been thinking about what George W. Bush signifies from a socio-political perspective. Looking at the world from the time of the ‘Big Bang’ of September 11th, 2001, until today almost seven years later, one can clearly observe how monstrous our human interaction has become. After much reading and analysis, I now understand that September 11th was not the starting point of a new world order, but to the contrary, it was purely the end of a specific human state of affairs.

The Democrats must admit it: Obama would lose to McCain

By Anatole Kaletsky

homepage.jpgAmerican Presidential elections have been compared with reality TV series or game shows, in which a gaggle of jumped-up nonentities aspiring to be celebrities are ritually humiliated in public and offered entertaining opportunities to self-destruct, until only one survivor remains. But this time round, a much more elevated analogy is sadly apposite. The 2008 US election has all the makings of a Greek tragedy, in which noble heroes and heroines are forced to follow a course to catastrophe, divinely preordained as punishment for sins and blunders committed by their forefathers in the dim and distant past. In acting out their ineluctable doom, the eloquent protagonists do not just destroy themselves but also their cities, their nations and even their entire civilisations. If this description sounds too grandiose, consider yesterday’s results from the Pennsylvania primary. The outcome seemed to be precisely calibrated by the gods to maximise the agony of the Democrats. It gave Hillary Clinton just the support she needed to stay firmly in contention, but not quite enough to turn the tide in her favour.

Not This Time…

Print & pdf

By Bill Noxid

slavery.jpgThe totality of American denial regarding issues of race never ceases to amaze me. Time and time again we are presented with opportunities to face the reasons for division, inequality, and strife on this planet, and time and time again we choose to ignore the truth and look the other way.

First, let me be clear. There is no situation on this planet that the populous faces that is not by design. Eons of effort have gone into creating this society ( and the burdens that control the people ) with great attention paid to every minute detail. The global / industry wide sub-prime “meltdown” ( or operation ) for instance, could not have occurred without a great deal of coordinated criminal effort and government complicity. The same reality applies to all of “society’s” dilemmas. The unending wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Lebanon, Darfur, Somalia, etc, are equally intentional as is the death, disease, homelessness, and hopelessness that grip the majority of this planet.
